Ninh Binh, Vietnam, is one of those places that might surprise you with how much it has to offer. Located in the northern part of the country, it’s often treated as a quick stop on the typical tourist route. But I’m here to tell you that Ninh Binh deserves much more than just a day trip—it’s a place that invites exploration and offers a deeper connection with both nature and culture.

The Beauty of Ninh Binh
As soon as I arrived, I was swept away by the beauty of the landscape. The air felt fresh, and the views were nothing short of mesmerising. Renting a bike was one of the best decisions I made, as motoring through winding roads felt like navigating through a living painting. The rolling hills draped in lush green rice paddies, serene rivers snaking through dramatic limestone cliffs, and the sky stretching endlessly above made me realise that there’s far more here than can be experienced in just a few hours. Every turn revealed a new place to visit, and each corner seemed to offer something more spectacular than the last.
Ninh Binh is often referred to as the "Halong Bay on land" because of its stunning karst formations that rise dramatically from rice paddies and waterways. The region is home to the Tràng An Landscape Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that boasts a series of caves, temples, and historic sites.

Must-Visit Places in Ninh Binh
Bai Dinh Pagoda
One of my favorite experiences was visiting Bai Dinh Pagoda, the largest Buddhist temple complex in Vietnam. Covering over 500 hectares, it features hundreds of intricately carved statues of Buddha, including a 100-ton bronze Buddha statue—the largest in Southeast Asia. While many visitors pass it by in favor of more well-known spots, this peaceful temple offers breathtaking views over the valley. It’s the kind of place where you can take a moment for reflection and feel completely at peace—despite the occasional surprise of a big blue and yellow lizard popping up (which at the time, did give me quite the scare, to be honest!).

Tam Coc Boat Ride
Exploring Ninh Binh felt like a treasure hunt. One of the most famous experiences here is a boat ride in Tam Coc, where you glide through a network of caves and towering limestone karsts. The boats are rowed by locals—usually with their feet instead of their hands! Watching them maneuver the oars so skillfully was a highlight of my trip, and I made sure to tip my guide well because, let’s be real, what a workout!

Hoa Lu Ancient Capital
For history lovers, Hoa Lu Ancient Capital is a must-visit. This was Vietnam’s capital in the 10th and 11th centuries under the Dinh and Le dynasties. Though only a few temples and remnants remain today, the site provides a glimpse into Vietnam’s feudal past and is surrounded by stunning natural scenery.
Hang Mua Viewpoint
If you’re up for a challenge, climbing the Hang Mua Viewpoint is well worth the effort. The 500-step climb rewards you with one of the most breathtaking panoramic views in Vietnam—overlooking Tam Coc, the Ngo Dong River, and the surrounding rice fields. The best time to visit is either early morning or late afternoon to catch the golden hues of sunrise or sunset. My own experience was a little different as I decided to venture out in the middle of the afternoon, when both the temperature and the UV were at their highest. Let me tell you, I have never sweated so much in my life!

Wildlife and Nature
The wildlife in Ninh Binh also adds to the charm of the area. From buffaloes grazing lazily in the fields to mountain goats navigating rocky cliffs, the natural wonders are everywhere. The Thung Nham Bird Park is particularly special, especially in the late afternoon when flocks of birds return to their nests at sunset.

Local Life and Hospitality
But Ninh Binh isn’t just about quiet temples and natural beauty—it’s a place full of energy and life. In the evenings, the town square comes to life with the sound of music as local women perform public dance shows, adding a layer of warmth and authenticity to the town’s atmosphere. While the nightlife is relaxed, it’s still the perfect setting to unwind with a drink in hand, sharing stories with fellow travelers.
Speaking of locals, the warmth of the people is what makes Ninh Binh truly special. They’re happy to share their corner of the world with visitors, offering advice, tips, and a genuine sense of hospitality. During my stay, I was lucky to find an Airbnb where the owners treated me so well and even gave me some local goodies as a departure gift! The most popular spot for tourists to stay while in Ninh Binh is Banana Tree Hostel. Unfortunately, it was fully booked when I arrived, so here’s a tip: be sure to book well in advance if you want to secure a spot! It’s a highly recommended hostel and often fills up quickly due to its central location and vibrant atmosphere.
